Perhaps south should bid again with 4S. 3S is fine when they invite as it is unlikely we can make a game. However when they bid 3NT there is no guarantee we are taking it down and without much help south can see 8 tricks - counting 7 spades slightly optimistically and the hA. And north might produce a trick, as in fact is the case.
