At the other table 2♣ was Michaels. Partnerships need to agree on strength for Michaels, eg some use a reference hand of KQxxx KQxxx xx x. Others use a "length-losers" > contract level (ie add the length of the 2 suits, subtract the number of losers). The above hand looks suitable for an initial Michaels but has no additional power, yet east bid again not once but twice, opposite a partner who has only shown preference and no values.
