Against precision 1c the principle of bidding as high as u can as fast as u can applies. East was following this policy. Nearly worked.
At the other table South's overcall of 2C is a bit ropey. The downside of this is that partner can find it difficult to compete as they don't know whether it is ropey or good. Also, it doesn't use up bidding space so oppo are not likely to be hindered by it.
We have been using an astpro style defence to precision 1C recently which seems to work quite well. So West overcalled 1D to show at least 5-4 in spades and another suit. At the very least it seems to discombobulate opponents. NS still got to 4H but South misplayed it allowing West to get a ruff.
Double shows at least 5-4 in hearts and another suit. 1NT first time round is for minors. 1H, 1S are natural overcalls. With a strong hand (not very likely) you usually do a Wayne and bide your time.

ReplyDeleteI like the focus on spades. What do x, 1nt mean with this astpro style?

ReplyDeleteAre you remembering one particular hand?
DeleteDepends on the hand whether or not I will wait. With strong balanced I am happy to let the opponents get into trouble.
