Lead problem. Oppo have struggled to game in their second/third suit, so likely to be 4-4, with west having void/singleton spade. U have a 15hcp so pretty much can play pard to have a bust. Can their be any other lead than the AK and another heart? At the table there was - the spade 8! With adjacent honours it is better to lead the honour. In this case South was hoping for pard to have the Ts - but oppo have ~6 spades therefore pard has ~3, ie 2:1 odds against pard
Your conclusion is right - do not lead low from this holding - but your odds calculation is wrong. On the base assumption that the opponent has six spades and partner three, a low spade works whenever partner as the sA, sK or sT. However you have discounted partner having a high honour. If you place those cards with east now it is only 3:4 against - partner has three small spades and east four small spades.

ReplyDeleteInteresting, I hadn't thought the sAsK being fixed cards and therefore should remove them from the calc. Ta.
