  1. There isn't anything to criticise on the first six bids. North isn't ashamed of the overcall, its not a powerhouse but it has decent solid values. When south introduces spades and the auction becomes competitive I would raise to 2S. Some play that 1S here shows five - I think that is wrong - but nevertheless then a raise is clear. Others might play a support redouble showing three spades and the raise shows four. Again its not my favourite method but its an option to agree with your partner. The point is I want to tell partner I have three good spades and a decent hand. The delayed raise (preference) just gave the opponents room to find their fit. That they didn't do well in finding their fit doesn't detract from my point.

After the double I would have been willing to compete to the three level with the east hand I have a useful value and a likely double fit. There are many benefits to pushing to a higher level. You might make something, the opponents might bid on and go down, the opponents might not bid on when they can make something, one down might be a good sacrifice (and it maybe too hard for the opponents to double. Only the vulnerability here makes me at all apprehensive about pushing to the three level.

As it happens it probably doesn't matter here as south has an extra spade and a double fit so will almost certainly push to the making 3S.
