2C overvalues the South hand. If pard can’t respond to 1s then u are not going to make game, partly because u are going to play the entire hand from declarer with a paucity of dummy entries. Not only loser should be considered in the evaluation but quick tricks as well.
Actually you might be cold for game if partner passes 1S eg hQJxxx and nothing else; sJ and cK and you are on the diamond finesse for 3NT etc.
Personally I normally open 1S with these hands. I am not adverse to opening 2NT with 20-22 and slightly offshape including 5422 hands but I don't like doing that with both majors. Upgrading to 2C then rebidding 2NT is possible.
I think it is a difficult opening bid decision and I wouldn't criticise partner too much almost whatever they chose.
yes, I accept my statement overstated the position. However bridge is an odds game. If pard cant make a response to 1S then the odds are well in favour (can do DDA to determine of course) of game not being a good spot to play the contract
I get about 70% chance of making some game given partner is 0-5 hcp. When that was the only restriction I got 72% and it reduced to 70% when I excluded six-card suits with responder.
Of course I would respond with some 5 counts. But nevertheless I think the prospect of game is decent.
