  1. 2nd table at good bidding. east should double (negative) and then bid spades, rather than spades direct, but with a NT bid from west as at 2nd table have enough to go to game.

  2. West North East South
    Pass
    1C X 1S Pass
    Pass 2D 4S

EW playing Precision so 1C shows 16+ pts any shape. North's double shows hearts and another suit.(although no one asks). After the pass (in tempo) by West, North asks about the 1S bid. She is told it is 5-7 points, 5+ spades and (obviously) non-forcing. In view of this she decides to re-open the bidding. Now East decides that her hand is worth a game bid.

    Two questions:
    (1) Should North re-open the bidding?
    (2) Is it ethical for East to bid game in view of the apparent mis-understanding with West?

  3. Sorry bidding format is skewift. Obviously, first pass is by South.

  4. Re 1) Oppo have the balance of points, and pard has failed to show any interest. Bidding could be ugly even undoubled vs oppo part score.
Re 2) Interesting. I would argue that most if not all of the UI contained in the information given is included implicitly in east's pass, so west already knows there is a misunderstanding re strength.

  5. East is not allowed to take account of the UI unless there are no logical alternatives. With seven spades there maybe no logical alternative. On a different hand where you weren't so sure which denomination you belonged in there could be a logical alternative below game and you might need to make that bid.

North may have been damaged if there was not in fact an agreement for 1S to be 5-7.

  6. Yes, situation is a little fuzzy which is why we (NS) didn't call the director. I suspect that East thought 1S would be forcing after a double whereas West didn't. However, as Hesitator points out, East will already realize that West has misunderstood the 1S bid, and may go for game anyway.

Tough luck on North, though, who may take West's explanation at face value and think they are competing for the part score. Also diamonds is a much better lead directive to partner if East plays the contract.
