North's 3D is conservative. A double or long suit game try might have been better. I think a long suit should be a decent suit when you have agreed a minor as you might want to try 3NT. South then might have competed with a fifth diamond and 9 points and a singleton (albeit the queen).
Perhaps south could compete anyway but there is a danger they make 4H or we are simply too high with all of those soft cards.
