  1. West should just bid 4S direct over 1NT. System is ON meaning transfer and then 4S is a mild slam try. Transfer allows NS to find there 5-5 minor fit. Should west X or bid 4S?

  2. Correction. System is ON but a with a slam try hand and shortage the next bid after transfer would show shortage and then 4S.

  3. I wasn't sure if the slam try applied after an overcall. It will be very low frequency that they will have an opening bid and we have a slam with a maximum of 29-30 combined high cards and no singleton.

The other consideration in the auction with solid spades was that I was keen to let partner play in case there was some damaging lead through him.

When they bid to 3D at unfavourable I imagined 500 if partner had the right cards so I doubled. Partner saw my double differently or evaluated his hand as more defensive.

The AKs are both offensive and defensive and with an undisclosed spade fit I think you should therefore be reluctant to pass the double.

  4. I agree full System ON is possibly suboptimal with 1NT overcalls-- but easy to remember rather than partial System On variants.
