  1. Interesting lead situation. 3H was not alerted hence as treated as natural. QJx of a suit which declarer doesn't seem a good idea. As it transpired North got pseudo squeezed and had to give up spades but pard came to rescue with the ST

    1. The squeeze on you was real. Declarer has ten red suit winners so you have to come down to three black cards one of which must be the cA otherwise the cK will win. So you must come down to two spades and therefore hope that south can hold spades.

I suspect my reasoning was not as careful as it should have been but relatively early on I pitched clubs to keep spades. It should be reasonably clear as three rounds of hearts were played first so declarer was known to be 4=3=5=1 or 4=3=6=0 early.

  2. At our table, I played 3NT as East. North wisely ducked the jack of clubs lead and South quickly has a lot of discards to make. I had shown a five card club suit, so South is reluctant to shorten that suit so the spades had to go. As Wayne says, North is then squeezed on the clubs and spades.
