West 2♠ is a really poor bid, balanced hand, average suit. X would be better and more descriptive
North's decision over 1♠ is interesting. North passed as didn't feel comfortable bidding at 2 level with marginal hand and shortage in pard's suit, and didn't have a negative X. At the other table, North jumped into the fire.
We got into a poor 3NT contract as NS (don't ask) but after the low spade lead I felt I should have made it. However, it is really nasty getting between the two hands, particularly when West ducks the JC lead.
I think it maybe better to play for a 3-3 club break and overtake (albeit a 3-3 break after a 5-0 break has been discovered is probably quite small %). Even then I think the D will come to 5 tricks before u get to 9 tricks. I think east needs to be careful about when they play the AH if eg west wins the AC and leads back a heart.
Thanks Mr H - I'm consoled that you would have gone down too :-) I still think it is difficult for the defence. Say I lead a low heart from dummy after winning JC. East must play her ace otherwise I get my second entry into hand. I would need to check on Deep Finesse what happens if she does come up with the ace but I suspect they have to give me a ninth trick whatever they lead.
On the matter of the contract, I would be interested to hear from Shaun what they would get to using LTC. There aren't too many losers between the NS hands.
This would not be a good board for modified LTC. We would count 5.5 losers for south and open 1C, the 1S overcall would mean north with 7.5 losers would bid 2D and we wouldn't find misfit until too high to increase loser count. South finds the major fit at 3S but would probably play in 3nt to try to avoid being doubled. Shared bottom board but maybe get lucky with poor defence :)
I suspect that without the spade overcall a lot of Acol, Precision or Standard American pairs would also reach a four spade game! A good hand for the lurker, although it is difficult for West to resist the temptation to overcall.

LOL, by my count 12 (hopefully they would at least find the spade fit), but would be "saved" by RKCB and end up at "only" 11.
ReplyDeleteSaid after a couple of whiskies!

ReplyDeleteWithout the 1S overcall we would end up in 4Sx for a bottom board :(
